Statement

We dedicate this issue to that most precious of modern commodities, the ego. Long a driving force in fashion, egotism has become the defining obsession of the nineties. The ego rears its head in Alicia Drake's look at male muses. She discovered that many designers have a rather personal idea about the whole phenomenon. "I'm my own muse," Tom Ford told Drake. Self-esteem also surfaced in Ian Phillip's article on designers and cinema, where he asked a dozen of the fashion world's creative luminaries whom they'd like to see play them in a film version of their life. "Me, in fact" was Gianfranco Ferre's reply. Yet if a necessary requisite of becoming a designer is a pumped-up pysche, contemporary menswear's success is fueled by the instinctive and frequently libidinous id....
