Ready, aim, whatever... No matter whether you've served two tours of duty or enlisted just this morning, the military can be a confusing institution. "Why," you might ask, is a Lieutenant General higher in rank in the Army than a Major General? What in the world is meant by an Accidental On-Purpose Discharge? And why, in the Libyan military, is it so hard to get a promotion? Look at Muammar Qaddafi," you might add. "He's at the top of the food chain in his own freaking country, and he's still only a colonel. Who do you have to blow to become a general in Libya?" Ah, the intrigue of it all. But as confusing, multilayered, and snafu-centric as it is, the military is a universe unto itself. And servicemen know the DRILL. You guys speak your own language and honor your own code. You have your own uniforms, your own haircuts, and - some might say unfortunately - your own chow. And that's why you deserve your own magazine. Soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines have the toughest jobs on the planet. We respect the sacrifices you and your brethren make every day. And whether you're in Baghdad, patrolling streets, or in Natick, Mass., perparing MREs, DRILL was created specifically for you. Earlier this year, DRILL's creative director, Gary French, and I visited Army and Air Force bases in Virginia and North Carolina, and this spring our staff met with Navy and Marine personnel during Fleet Week in New York City in an effort to learn what you guys want to see in a magazine. We've also talked to, oh, I don't know, a zillion other current or veteran members of the four brances of the armed services and the Coast Guard. We even outfitted the 1st Battalion of the N.Y. National Guard's 101st Cavalry in cool vintage sports jerseys for our first ever style guide. We'll cover all the subject you've told us you're interested in: cars, babes, sports, beer, movies, music, video games, and adventrue, all served with a side of humor. Witness out tribute to poor judgement - abd bullet-ridden vehicles - in our Boys Gone Wild comic. Most important, though, DRILL speaks your language. We don't have to explain to you that Class Six, our alcohol sectiopn, is also military parlance for booze. You already know that. And we know that, as members of the U.S. Armed Forces, you're based around the globe - from Iraq to Korea, Germany to Japan. So we'll cover the planet like no other men's mag, from the Halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli. Which, of course, is in Libya. Lance Gould |
