Statement
Broken Wrist Project originated as an artist collective in Los Angeles in the late 1990's. The group was formed to both mobilize and promote the efforts of a creative syndicate of painters, illustrators, and designers, all working in close proximity to one another and sharing similar sensibilities and aesthetics.
When it came time to consolidate the group's work into a book, the Broken Wrist turned to a network of writers stationed in Chicago to provide literary content that would both inspire and navigate the group's visual identity. The result is The Broken Wrist Project Book Series, a hybrid format that blurs the line between street-level art books and literary journals. The cornerstone of the series is the comprehensive resurrection of the illustrated short story, an artform that is sadly and quietly dying within the pages of America's periodicals and journals.
The books will be printed in full color, devoid of any advertising, political commentary, or editorial grousing. Broken Wrist is simply interested in telling stories, developing characters, and finding the most qualified artists to create the most dynamic images.
Since organizing the book series, the bucket brigade of Broken Wrist members has expanded to include photographers, graffiti artists, journalists, filmmakers, and musicians, all of which will make contributions as the series unfolds.
